I’m guessing you currently have a list of lists to complete, a birthday party to plan, and a house to run but today all the to-do lists are off the table. No job is more important than that of a mom and you deserve a little time out. As the most valuable person in your family unit, you need to look after yourself to ensure the machine keeps running. So let’s cut the analogies and cut to the chase because it’s time for some Spa treatment! You could book a day at a luxury retreat and be done with it but this is the list for moms on a budget and short on time. Here are 10 easy home spa day tips to get you rested and recharged.
Eat a Clean Breakfast
What is clean eating exactly? Simply, it’s about eating whole foods that are minimally processed and as close to their natural form as possible. Along with a day of pampering and looking after your body, enjoy the benefits of a light detox. It’s as easy as a fruit salad, natural yogurt and a dash of honey. Skip the coffee and replace it with herbal tea. Juice your favorite veggies and drink water throughout the day to help your body hydrate and flush out toxins.
Take That Nap
Even if you’re not tired you need to lay down and close your eyes. Practice day dreaming and let yourself drift off. Daydreaming is one of the key ingredients that keeps children carefree and happy so tap into that spirit and regain some of your childlike vigor. Take a Long Bath
Bath time is about basic hygiene but also bath time is about luxury. It’s about closing the blinds and lighting candles and having lots of bubbles. If your inner voice is compiling a grocery list, stop! Step one is about wrestling the impulse to do more in the time you have and instead, do just one thing. Nothing. Bathe!
Play Your Favorite Music
Norah Jones, the sound of birds, and running water is a great way to get your mind to change gear. Play it softly in the background to transform the space which is usually full of activity and just relax.
Treat Your Skin
Most of us have a collection of face masks and perfumed creams that we’re saving for a special occasion and well that occasion has arrived. Use one or use them all and don’t rush! We’re not talking a quick splash of your daily face cream, go to town! You’re done when you have the urge to take another nap.
Like those face creams, there’s a nail varnish you picked up months ago, but haven’t yet opened. Regardless if it’s pale pink, glittered or lavish red, glide on a coat or two and enjoy the feeling of glam returning to your Tuesday.
Catch Up with Friends
You probably have several unanswered Whatsapp messages that could do with some attention. Without having to leave the comfort of your bed you can let all those connections know they are still in your thoughts. Voice notes are the quickest way to get a lot said without having to correct those random “auto-corrects.”
Read a Book or Watch a Movie
I know this takes up a seemingly wasteful chunk of time, but sometimes, stealing those 30 minutes is just what you need to feel you’ve indulged. Reading a chapter of 50 Shades or watching an episode of that ridiculous Vampire series is the perfect guilty pleasure. Just do it!
We’re not talking a 10km run here unless, of course, that’s your thing. This is the time to take a leisurely stroll or roll out your yoga mat. The idea is to clear your mind and get in touch with your body. Get your blood flowing by taking a 20 minute walk or stretching session. It will invigorate you physically and mentally without the sluggish after effects you’d get when your caffeine fix wears off.
Now, Make it Happen!
Ideally, if you can get the kids taken care of for a full day, you can maximize the time you get to recharge your mommy mojo. If grandparents live close-bye, take them up on the offer to babysit, its a win-win! You will return to your little wolf-pack fresh and full of energy, ready to handle whatever comes your way. Resist the urge to quickly sort out the washing or check your emails, that’s for another day mom!
