It’s hard to believe that summer has tapered off and the back to school season is here! With new drivers on the roads and heavier traffic during rush hour it’s important to take extra precautions when you get behind the wheel. If you’re a busy mom, like me, you will likely be juggling errands, phone calls and trying to drive kids all over the place all day long so you need to know how to safely navigate those roads! Check out these 5 safety hacks for busy moms that you can start today and stay safe behind the wheel.
Keep Your Cell Phone Out of Reach
We all know that the temptation is real to glance at your phone or double check an appointment on your calendar while you drive. Even if you’re stopped at a light, it’s still not a good idea to look down at your phone. A good rule of thumb is to simply keep your phone out of reach while you’re on the road. Take a look at your to-dos before you head out and always pull over if you absolutely need to check your schedule. You can assign a special ring for your nanny or husband if you must answer certain calls so you don’t have to look at your phone every time it rings while you are driving!
Use a Hands-Free Device
According to car accident lawyers in Texas, distracted driving is one of the most common causes of accidents. This may sound like a no-brainer but using a hands-free device can help eliminate a lot of the distraction that using the phone while driving creates. This way you won’t be able to glance down and read anything on your phone but if an emergency call comes through you’ll have the ability to answer as safely as possible if you need to.
Set Up a Carpooling System
With so many kids headed back to school there will be plenty of friends or neighbors you might be able to carpool with. This can help free up some time for you and other parents allowing you to get more of your to-do list accomplished and by keeping as many vehicles off the road as possible! Creating less traffic on the roads through carpooling is something you can easily start doing today!
Use a Physical Planner
As a busy mom, you need a really good planner! When you use a physical planner to map out your day or week as opposed to your phone calendar it lessens the temptation for you to pull out your phone while you’re on the road. Take a good look at your planner each morning so that you have a really clear idea of what you need to get done and where you need to be when throughout the day. You can always check it once you pull over or run into to Starbucks for that morning java!
Streamline Your Driving as Much as Possible
Take a long look at what tasks you need to complete at the beginning of each day. Figure out if there’s a way that you can streamline your driving so that you’ll be going back and forth less. Staying off the roads as much as possible is a great way to help keep you and your family safe behind the wheel and also free up some of your time. Use websites like Amazon that will ship your items to you or nowadays most grocery stores offer some kind of home delivery service!
