Being a stay at home Mom and having the responsibility of feeding my kids lunch everyday takes some time and energy. I have to make sure I have plenty of tricks up my sleeve and a full arsenal of delicious and easy meals to make. Usually my kids even like to get involved in the preparation fun so I need lunch that is easy and mess free! Enter the worlds best (and easiest) grilled cheese sandwich consisting of just a few ingredients like melted cheese and buttered toasted bread. Read on to find out how we make this is easy and yummy piece of culinary heaven.
Pick the Best Bread
Yes there are lots of different kinds of bread out there so make sure you pick a good one. We prefer name brand (not generic) white bread slices and sometimes even use Texas toast because it is thick and toasts up nicely. Avoid breads with holes in them. You can even use Rye, Wheat or any kind of bread you like, just make sure they are not thin flimsy slices.
Don’t forget the spread
Everyone loves that browned look on the outsides of the grilled cheese but how do you achieve that perfect color? Well butter spread of course! Make sure you butter both sides of the bread for flavor plus it helps to avoid sticking to the pan. My kids love this part so I always let them help. The old butter and knife technique is great but the kids (and sometimes me too) tear the bread when trying to butter it so my go-to nowadays, especially since they love helping me make grilled cheese sandwiches, is the new Land O Lakes® Soft Squeeze™ Spread.
It is in a convenient, easy to squeeze bottle for less mess. We love it because it’s easy to squeeze and we can just grab it out of the fridge and go! It really helps keep the bread intact, no crumbs, and keeps things clean;especially with the kids.
Made with real butter, it’s also great for cooking buttery fried eggs, stacks of fluffy pancakes, or topping sweet corn on the cob! I seriously can’t live without it now and always look for it when shopping at Walmart!
Got Cheese?
There are many cheeses out there but make sure you stick to the ones that melt the best. You can use shredded or slices for this task just make sure it is one you like. We prefer to use cheddar slices because I love cheddar and the slices are easy for the kids to work with. I find shredded cheese just makes a mess everywhere and we are trying to avoid MESS, right! Getting the perfect amount of cheese is an art and depends on the thickness of the bread you chose. You don’t want too much cheese but you need to make sure you have enough. If you do use shredded cheese, use about 1/3 cup and if you use slices then 1 or 2 is enough. My kids like 1 slice but my hubby likes to use 2.
Take Your Time
The best grilled cheese sandwich does not get toasted in a matter of seconds. Take your time with this step. Preheat your pan on medium-low to medium heat before you put the bread on there as this will help with sticking and burning. The bread needs to toast at the same rate that the cheese melts so you need to watch it, flip it at the right time and press down firmly with a spatula on the sandwich while it cooks. Usually a total of 5 minutes per side will do the job but this depends on the kind of pan you are using and what temperature you are cooking, adjust accordingly. Of course, as always, please supervise you kids in the kitchen especially around a hot stove.

Grilled cheese is probably my favorite meal. It’s so easy and it has my literal two favorite things: bread and cheese! And butter too, I guess lol.
That butter spread looks great!! I’ll have to try that soon. & We love using Texas Toast for our grilled cheeses!
