With Halloween just around the corner I find myself scurrying to the store to find the perfect costumes for my kids. I love all the crazy Halloween decorations fully stocked and waiting on the store shelves and although I am tempted to pick up more ghosts and goblins to add to my Halloween collection, I’m also inspired to make my own! This year why don’t you get silly with the kids and make some fun memories together by creating your own easy Halloween decor crafts, the DIY Paper Pumpkin Chain.

The Paper Pumpkin Chain
I still have small kids at home so projects must be simple but still have that wow factor. The last thing I want to do is a complicated DIY project while my kids have bounced on to another craft. Over the years I have found that one of the easiest ways to create some original DIY Halloween decor and decorations with kids of all ages is by manipulating paper. DIY Paper pumpkins chains are a fun way to get into the spirit and get everyone involved plus fun little pumpkins can adorn your home for years to come and can be added to each year as your children grow.
How to Make DIY Paper Pumpkin Chains
Ideas4DIY.com has a ton of straightforward and colorful ideas that inspired me to think of my own take on this fun paper pumpkin project. Instead of going with the standard orange accordion pumpkin in this paper pumpkin craft, why not get a little spooky with black instead? Use Color On Black Coloring paper and oil pastels to bring the scariest or silliest pumpkin face your little ones imagine come to life. Whether you’re making a simple one-dimensional pumpkin or cutting your paper into strips to achieve a three-dimensional effect, nothing says Halloween like a black background popping with classic Halloween oranges and purples.

What You’ll Need
- Black Paper
- Oil Pastels, paint pods, dimensional craft paint, or paint pens
- Glue or paste (glitter glue is a fun option too)
Instructions
- Accordion fold black paper into six 3 inch sections. If your sheet is smaller than 9×13 inches, then just accordion fold to a width that’s suitable to what you envision the size of your paper chain pumpkins being.
- On one side of the folded accordion draw half a pumpkin or use the template on the link above to trace a pumpkin.
- Cut along the lines to achieve that fun accordion effect. Then decorate each pumpkin in the chain however you want. For larger pumpkins, just fold your paper once.
- If you want your accordion pumpkins to stand well on their own, consider gluing cardstock to the back of the paper first before folding. This will give you a decoration you can display inside or out.
- Unfold your paper, and you should have a few pumpkins to decorate. Let the kids go crazy decorating their pumpkins and fashioning the silliest, scariest, or friendliest pumpkin faces.
Lots of fun options
You and your kids can have fun thinking outside the traditional Halloween box for this easy decor DIY Halloween craft. Consider using colorful paints for your paper pumpkins or paint pods to glam up your pumpkins. If these cute pumpkins will be on your porch you can get a small black light and some neon dot paint to really amp up the fright effect and you are guaranteed to be the talk of your neighborhood, even with your porch lights are off!
