Brush or Bath
Super Easy and much needed to keep things clean! Your fur friend will thank you and let’s face it Mom, do you really have the extra 20 minutes to sit down and brush and/or give your pet a bath? I didn’t think so! Give over the brushing and grooming to the kids besides, its great bonding time for the kids and their pet. Tip- Do it outside as this one can get messy as dog hair will surely be flying around and you for sure don’t need anymore dog hair in the house!

Feed Pets
Our Buster, a 110 pound Lab, is a big ole boy and eats 5 cups a day of his food at 5 different times. I love to give this chore over to the kids. Of course, I check with them to make sure it was done so the dog does not starve but an easy and quick chore! They take turns doing the feeding every day along with making sure the water dish is always full. Keep the dog food and bowls somewhere they kids can reach and be prepared for a little mess depending on their age. Thankfully when they do make a mess we have our Liberman Wonder Mop on hand! This bad boy has Microfiber GRIPSTRIPS™ that lift up to 20% more dirt and works on all surfaces. My favorite part is I can wash the mop head up to 50 times in my washer before I buy a new one! Also the power wringer lets me remove more water from the mop head so my floors do dry faster when I use it and I have more time to focus on life’s moments with my kids and furry friend!

Pick Up Poo
Don’t shoot the messenger here and I admit this is a very age appropriate chore probably for kids almost 7 and older because of the mess. Changing kitty litter, cleaning around a littler box or picking up poo outside with a pooper scooper is gross, yes I admit it, but it is something the kids can do! Get them some gloves and make sure they know feces is gross and to never touch it or put it near their face and let them go to town. My kids don’t mind picking up after Buster and if they do it every few days it only takes them 5 minutes or less. If you have a cage or litter box to clean inside, make sure you keep your Wonder Mop handy as well!

Pet Play/ Walks
I love this one again because of the bonding and the health benefits for the kids and our dog. They all love to be outside and Buster for sure loves going on walks. If your kids are old enough and you feel safe letting them go by themselves, depending on your surroundings, let them go. My kids are 5 and 6 and don’t walk by themselves so I do this one with them but I don’t mind as I love walking also. I know some pets don’t “walk” so I would substitute play here. Kids can play with the cats, birds, rabbits and whatever kind of pet that they have. Pets love the interaction and many need it to thrive! I know Buster needs his 30 minutes of play or walking every single day!

I JUST got our kids started with helping to take care of our dog. They feed her and walk her. Next is picking up the poop. I’ll be happy to hand that chore over.
It’s awesome to get kids involved and helping!
My oldest is the one who lets the dog outside to potty and cleans the yard, my second oldest feeds the dog and gives her fresh water everyday. My three year old gets to brush her.
My kids have been begging for a dog for AGES and I’ve been hesitatant to add things to MY list with a dog! This is a great list!
My two year old designated herself as the dog feeder (with adult supervision and assistance as needed). She gets so excited to feed him and even tells him to sit before pouring his food and then giving him the “eat” command.
One of my girls’ chores is to feed the cats. Even my 2 year old does it. She loves to help. All three of them have their own days to feed the cats.
we don’t currently have a pet and one of the reasons why is because I wanted my kids to be old enough to help take care of one. These tips are great!
We don’t have a pet. However, my neighbor has a dog that my daughter has almost adopted — at least as far as the pet play/walks and feeding is concerned.
These are good tips because we are considering adopting another kid and maybe getting a pet at tht point.
Good post!
These are some great ideas! When my little one gets older I will definitely him help out.
These are some great suggestions! We have two cats and my child loves to feed them, but we are looking into getting a dog, so I will definitely remember these if we ever do get one!
Such great tips!! I am all for teaching kids at an early age to do chores to teach them responsibility!
This is such a great list and perfect timing! We are contemplating adding another pet to the family, a puppy. Saving this for my kids!
Great advice. As much as kids love their pets, giving them chores related to caring for them would be a breeze. I am not sure about picking up poop, but cleaning after feeding would be a big help.
These are good suggestions for the kids. I love giving the kids tasks that help them learn responsibility. Taking care of pets certainly does that.
Hopefully playing with the family pet isn’t too much of a chore, but these are all great ideas! That mop looks awesome too!
