It seems so long ago that my 5 and almost 7-yr-old were born! The pride I felt being their Mom was tremendous and the urge to protect them was almost overwhelming from the start! Talk about mama bear, well I am here to tell you, it’s real! Those of you who are mama bears already will be able to identify with me because protecting them at all costs is something that comes very natural to mama bears! So many things go through your mind when you have a little one like “Will I get it right?” “Will I hear them cry at night?” “Are they healthy?” and “How do I bathe them?” The list goes on and on and believe me, the older they get, it doesn’t change. You still wonder if you are getting it right but looking back, there is one thing I’m glad I did, and that is preserving my baby’s stem cells.
You have probably heard about it on the news or heard other moms talk about it but what is cord blood banking all about and what are stem cells? Simply put cord blood banking is the process of collecting and storing your baby’s umbilical cord blood stem cells for potential future use. Stem cells are defined as “an undifferentiated cell of a multicellular organism that is capable of giving rise to indefinitely more cells of the same type, and from which certain other kinds of cell arise by differentiation.” Cord blood stem cells are unique and have the ability to become the different types of cells of the blood and immune system!
Life-saving potential
Your baby’s umbilical cord is made of tissue and contains blood, both of which are rich sources of powerful stem cells. Preserving them may give your child or an immediate family member, depending on the condition and other factors, the opportunity to use this resource for current cord blood therapies.
Treat diseases
Cord blood stem cells have been used for 30 years in the treatment of over 80 serious diseases, such as certain blood cancers, immune and metabolic disorders, and hematologic conditions. Research is underway for the use of cord blood in conditions that have no cure today, like autism, hearing loss, and cerebral palsy. Can you imagine if you were able to give your child or family member a gift like this?
Simple and safe
Cord Blood Registry (CBR) is a newborn stem cell preservation company. Collecting your baby’s cord blood is a simple and safe procedure that takes place immediately after the birth of your child. I was amazed at how easy it was and how great CBR was to work with and still is! It’s wonderful that CBR believes every family should have the opportunity to preserve their newborn’s stem cells. That’s why they offer affordable payment options to fit almost every family budget and also offer a Gift Registry, where friends and family can contribute towards the cost of banking. My yearly rate is very affordable and worth every penny!

Investment in Future
Banking your child’s cord blood may be an investment in the future health of your family. Hopefully no one in the family will ever need to use it but but I’m glad it’s there as a potential option we might not have otherwise! Research is underway for the use of cord blood in conditions that have no cure today, like autism, hearing loss, and cerebral palsy. CBR also invests in the future of stem cell science with their Family Health Registry, which aims to better understand the conditions most common to CBR families and helps connect them to relevant research. Extra perks are their social community and their blog with helpful posts on everything from pregnancy nutrition, to a hospital go-bag list, to parenting tips. As a Mom, this is amazing, and I truly hope the research can turn into something so positive!
Other advantages
Today, many conditions may be treatable with cord blood as a part of a stem cell transplant, including various cancers and blood, immune and metabolic disorders.* Mama bear needs all the help I can get. Also with CBR, every family has access to CBR’s team of Certified Genetic Counselors, who can discuss your family’s medical history as it relates to newborn stem cells, and educate you on your options to preserve them for your family’s future. They have been very helpful to me and I have reached out a few times over the years!

This truly is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity as cord blood can only be collected at birth. Cord blood banking is your only chance to capture the powerful cord blood stems cells unique to your child and as a parent (Mama Bear) I want to do everything to provide future possibilities to my family! I know I will make many mistakes raising my kids but one thing I’m glad I did was choosing to Preserve My Baby’s Stem Cells with CBR.

Thanks for the terrific post

Totaly agree with your thought. This post is so relatable for me.
Such great information here for what can be pretty confusing! We are so lucky to have this technology available to us.
This is such an important topic! I so with I had been given more information about this when our daughter was born. I didn’t realize how much I’d have to personally research when having a baby. As naive as that sounds haha I thought our doctors would be providing us with more useful information. But I definitely want to do this with baby #2!
I’ve heard so much about this, and just haven’t jumped in to all of the info. It’s definitely something I’d consider if I have another little one 🙂
We stored both of our kids stem cells with CBR so I totally get it! It’s been almost 16 and 13 years ago — the cells are still there because my husband called them to ask about a different use for the stem cells and they checked them out again. It gives us peace of mind!
It’s truly a miracle that science and technology allows us to do this . Thanks for sharing!
